You can see many breeds of the Bulldog but the English bulldog breed that many have can be found to be started in England. Many say that the English Bulldog is a mix of the mastiff and a pug. There are often different standards for Bulldogs in shows, and these can vary depending on where the show is held. English Bulldogs have different standards than American Bulldogs of French Bulldogs. All bulldog breeds have the brachycephalic skull. Similar breeds with this same issue include boxers and dogs with short muzzles. Typical health issue include breathing hard, snoring while asleep, allergy problems, and very painful interdigital cysts that can be treated by a knowledgeable owner or a vet. Cherry eye is common as is hip problems in older dogs. Hip dysplasia is not usually a problem, if ever, since bulldogs are bowlegged. It is very common for English Bulldogs to be born through c-section, although some females have had no problems giving birth to their litters in the usual way. Often in past years and still sometimes today the females would die trying to give birth to their litters because of their large heads.
Many english bulldog breeders can and may do screenings on their stock to track bloodlines and thier breed if they want to keep the bloodlines from interbreeding. Some of the usual illnesses and health problems do not seem to effect the English Bulldog breed. Where many dog breeds can get cancers, and heart problems far more easily, and more often, the English Bulldog does not. Daily cleaning of the “rope” or folds of skin around the dogs neck and face keeps the area clean and bacteria breeding infection free. If your English Bulldog is kept to daily walks and exercise and eating healthier many will not have heart problems to being with. Weight can become an issue and to English standards the male should be 55 pounds for male and 50 for female. In the US the English Bulldog standard is 50 pounds for male and 40 for female. Tail docking is common with many other breeds, but not so with the English Bulldog. Their tail is normally short and curls to the body. If the tail is too tight to the body in a show dog this is undesirable in the UK.
